What the social media has become known for most is the inglorious provision of a platform for insults. This has more than balanced its advantages as an instant carrier of messages and its other positive attributes.
One of the biggest victims of the social media around Benue South Senatorial District has been former President of the Nigerian Senate, Chief David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark, who has kept on silently absorbing invectives from both social media attention seekers and ignorant critics, as well as those who just talk because others are talking. However, Senator Mark himself has always, in his witty humour, pronounced himself as the person who should be insulted by Idoma people. Yet I make bold to say that even if everyone is casting aspersions on him, it should not be any person from Akpegede. I will give only three reasons to show that Akpegede has benefitted from Senator David Mark more than any other community on the surface of the earth.
One, the Federal Technical College in Akpegede, which everyone knows was influenced by then General David Mark, has continued to provide livelihoods for many Akpegede people in terms of employment, vocational training, and contracts.
Two, the 18-hole International Golf Course in Akpegede, built personally by Chief David Mark and donated to the community, has continued to uplift the economic and social status of Akpegede as many young boys and girls make money functioning as Caddies and amateur players on the Course. It must be commended that in its short lifespan the Course has produced some professional golfers who are making money playing around Nigeria and outside. In addition, the David Mark International Golf Academy in Akpegede, effectively managed by David Mark Jr, has become the best youth club in Nigeria, producing international champions and winning millions in cash and scholarships every year. It is instructive that ninety percent of these youths are from Akpegede.
Three, the Dam in Akpegede, which was also influenced by Senator David Mark as one of his constituency projects, has become a huge source of income for the Akpegede Community(from the sale of water to tankers and sale of fish from the dam water) just as it has become the greatest source of water supply to Otukpo town, in the last few years especially, with the failure of the Benue State Government’s Water Board to pump water from the Otobi Water Works.
Respected Social Media Judges, my objective followers and co-debaters, with these few points of mine, I believe that I have been able to convince you, but not confuse you, that Akpegede people have benefitted more from Senator David Mark than other people!(I’m in debate mood please).
Yet Akpegede remains silent as an Akpegede son proudly leads the social media insults on Chief David Mark!
